I'm from the school of "not everything you read on the internet is correct or valid", but this forum posting does a pretty good job of explaining exhaust theory. I've read similar statements in the past from someone who used to be a design technician at Walker Muffler. One of the things I remember most from the Walker article is that you need a minimum of 8" of tail pipe beyond the muffler for an exhaust to scavenge properly. An interesting statement in this age of ricers with 3" of tailpipe on a "turbo" muffler. I don't know how that statement effects exhausts without mufflers.
I do know that I had an experience where my exhaust snapped off just behind the cat on my Saab 900T. It was NASCAR loud, and boy did the power increase.
