Here is a great graphic of how the 2-stroke benefits from the right exhaust. This diagram shows the basics, but from what I have delved into there is a very complicated science behind the design of these things to maximize power in certain powerbands. Wrapping the header and the diffuser (cone nearest the engine) increases power, but also moves the powerband higher in the RPM range. I have learned alot about how all exhaust flows by understanding how the 2-stroke works. Some of what is going on can also apply to a 4-stroke and turbos (as have been discussed already, so I wont repeat anything).
