Hmmm. When GM was flush, and owned 60% of the market, they agreed (THEY AGREED) to the deals that the union asked for. That was the time, when gm had a full chest of money, to make a stand. They didn't. So the unions asked for the moon (a living wage, health care coverage, guaranteed work, a retirement (the nerve of those guys)) and the Brass gave it to them.
This would be the same brass that justifies their enormous salaries by stating that you have to pay that kind of money to get good help. You know, people with 'vision' and 'foresight'.
And now, when it turns out that the Union legacy costs are huge, it's the unions fault? You are gonna have to help me out here. How is it the unions fault to expect that the company will live up to the contracts and guarantees that it made?
And lets check in with all the jobs out there that are non-union, shall we? Lower pay, and little/no benefits. That sounds like a good deal. And the CEO's of those companies not only have huge salaries, but they get healthcare benefits and retirement packages too. Nice. Real Nice. Those who can't pay do, and those that can don't have to.
I will give this to you, though. When you work for a smaller company, and everyone knows everyone, you usually do get treated right. However, at most any company that is big enough that you become a number, you become just another cost to be minimized. Another 'resource' to be purchased at the lowest cost.
