Labor Unions can never be a check to monopoly, simply because it feeds at the table of the monopolist, not to mention Union itself being not only a de facto but de jure trust. Nor can any progressive political movement simply because government as a player in the market place is a monopolist itself.
The only real check to monopoly is a set of competitors with strong financing and are hell bent on competition. Today's automobile market is much much more competitive than it was in the heydays of the labor union. GM used to control 60% of the market, and therefore had the power of price setting; today, the largest player only accounts for less than 25% of the market, and there are dozens of players with 2% or more market shares (hence a legit participant with any influence); that simply was never the case in the era of union movement.
