Unions were from an era when major industries (steel and automobile back then) were essentially monopolized by a few giants. In a free market with many employers chasing workers, if you like to have your weekends off, or work no more than 40hrs a week, or a safe work environment or free child care for that matter, you should be able to find an employer that provides all that. It makes no sense for an institution like the Unions, which is akin to central-planning and highly inflexible.

In a monopolized or oligopolized market, union was a way for the workers to get a slice of the monopolistic profit . . . ultimately all at the expense of the consumers.

Union as an institution has long become obsolete as the employers with which it shared monoplistic profits no longer has the sand box to themselves in highly competitive markets nowadays. Union contract inflexibility ultimately dooms the employers as well as the unions themselves . . . all because the union bosses can really find any productive works for themselves therefore have to drag down the union and the companies along with themselves.
