have served their purpose in the past of protecting workers, i do think that day has passed and now it is more about "we can do this and x company will have to take it". they do still have a place in some things however.

it does seem that the autoworkers unions and the airline industry unions are the most unreasonable in demands without consideration for the life of the company that supports the workers. unfortunately, it's the workers that pay the price of bankruptcy instead of the union leaders who "encourage" the workers to not accept things.

unions are not all at fault however. i was listening to npr this past sunday and they were talking about how 20 years ago company ceo's were earning 7x what the average worker was earning, but now its up to 200x what the average guy is bringing home. overall, while the stock market has gone up 7x over that time, the average company is only bringing in a 6x improvement in the same time period. so the ceo's are being rewarded handsomely for crappy work at the same time that people are being fired or downsized to "save the company money". i'm not saying ceo's dont deserve high incomes, but perhaps make them more accountable for their pay like the average worker is.

i disagree with the comment that union bosses will learn to earn a wage at hourly wage rates, because the 3rd world incomes will still be less than ours, but more than they earn now. there is a reason they are becoming 2nd world countries, and it is costing the usa dearly. our quality of life will go down as more and more are affected by the offshoring of jobs. unfortunately the usa and shareholders and companies don't seem to realize there is a cost to doing business that cannot always be passed along.

with all the credit card companies and health industries and government industries continuing to farm our personal and financial information to countries that have even less safeguards to them than the usa you can expect more problems with identity theft and associated problems.
