Yes there were huge ruthless monopolies and trusts that emerged in the past. That was checked by the progressive and labor movements. However, the truth is that in many ways there is effectively less competition today than ever. There may be regulations to regulate monopoly and corporate practices on some levels but acquisition and the march to market dominance continue. It has just slowed and been forced to be more subtle and less ruthless. But never have so few controlled so much at a global level. The emergence of a strong global market as we have moved from the national model may have taken some of the wind out of those sails but the old powerhouse players are still in there working to consolidate their might. That is part of the push behind the focus on the labor thing. They want to exploit the advantages of cheaper labor in their pursuit of dominance. It is same old song.
