I think it has more to do with the electronics being solid and well-designed to begin with. Some are, some aren't. But the bigger issue is complexity. Back in the day when cars had electrical systems rather than electronics, German and Swedish cars had great electrics and British and Italian cars had abysmal ones. American cars were OK. Japanese cars were too, at least some of the time.
Then came electronics and complexity set in. Now we have engine management, climate control, ride control, tire pressure sensors, GPS, power everything, and ridiculous entertainment "systems." The more stuff there is, the more likely it is to fail. Can a firmer/harder ride affect some circuit boards and components? Probably. So does age, moisture, and corner-cutting on designs.
IMHO, modern cars with these highly complex systems are going to be a big problem as things will be too expensive to fix and many problems won't be easy to solve without large infusions of cash. This will take otherwise decent cars off the road because some computer has died and costs half the value of the car to replace.
