I agree 100% that connectors are frequently a problem (along with solder joints, frequently ones on connectors). But I don't agree that modern cars (depending on how you define modern) have worse connectors.
My first Saab was a 1972 99 with electronic fuel injection. My current one is a '97 9000 Aero. The '72 probably had somewhere around 1/100 the number of electrical connections, yet had connector-related (and every other kind) of electrical problems *much* more frequently than the Aero.
I attribute a lot of that to the poor techniques they used in those days to try to keep water out of the connectors. The waterproofing and other aspects of the connectors have improved tremendously over the years.
