Mostly because people say the same thing every 10 years or so. Fuel injection was supposed to be the end of the home mechanic, but now home mechanics are retrofitting it into older cars and tuning it on their laptops - no one dreamed that would be desirable or possible 20 years ago! Compact front wheel drive architecture was supposed ot make it impossible to do repairs at home, but that never happened (okay, I'll give you Audi) and now we're used to crawling in through the wheel well to change the belts.
I think my '87 9kT is pretty easy to work on - but imagine 23 years ago when it was new - turbocharger, computer controlled wastegate, electronic fuel injection, ACC, EDU - wowza! Sure, if I need a new ECU it costs as much as the car is worth. I guess it's a good thing I can go used on the bay for $20.
Yes, I can't stand beside the motor in the engine bay or replace the fuel pump with a screwdriver like in my RWD '82 Mazda 626, but cars are always going to progress and I bet there will still be plenty of home mechanics 20 years from now, and in a world where Accords make 270 hp, I'm pretty excited to see what the future holds.
