Yes, it is getting more and more complicated and it takes more and more special tools (read factory scan tools) to repair the cars. But than again, the SRS system on the first Saab's could and still can only be accessed and reset with the factory tool.
Just this week I had an 06 Volvo V70 in with a A/C problem and the cold and heat was fluctuating back and forth.
It had 7 fault codes in the CCM and after resetting those and running a calibration sequence, it worked as it should.
Without the factory scan tool it would not been possible to fix that problem, which was not a problem per see anyway.
Don't know what had happened to that car but I saw some evidence of bod shop repairs so I suspect that had disconnected a whole bunch of things and then turned on ignition or so and logged all those codes making the system go to sleep.
