I grew up driving rear wheel drive cars with bias ply tires, drum brakes, and no snows in lake effect snow infested West Michigan. That's what everyone drove because that's pretty much all there was for most of the history of cars. So when front-wheel drive cars with disc brakes and radial tires came along we felt pretty lucky. Traction control and antilock brakes were frosting on the cake. A Saab with a decent set of M/S tires is all a skilled driver needs for all but the most extreme winter conditions. Conversely, even with studded snow tires and AWD things can still go horribly wrong a lot easier than you might think, so spare us the self-righteousness. All of the aids and gizmos in the world are still no substitute for skill, experience and good judgement.
