Car based or not, SUVs' ability in bad weather breeds over confidence. And most people are not skilled at handling a vehicle at the edge of control.
That's one reason you still see SUVs off the road in winter storms, stuck up to their frames, on their sides or roof. Car-based ones are better than the old ones, but there are a helluva lot of old ones still around.

Drive any road, especially a major highway, in a bad snow storm and you're bound to see some yahoo in an SUV off the road. I see it all the time here in New England. I've even seen it in heavy rain.

Having owned an SUV, I know how they give a false sense of security and stability. But when they get loose they're harder to get back under control than a car, and the higher center of gravity is not your friend.
