nah... think of it like South Park... if you offend/make fun of everyone, including yourself, you are no longer offensive... kind of... ha!
absolutely there are just as many idiot car drivers (possibly more)... but the higher center of gravity of an SUV makes it easier to get oneself in trouble even if one is well intentioned... but like I said earlier + you reinforced strongly, times are changing... more people are used to SUVs + the SUVs are improving...
btw, I have (extensively) driven a few reasonably well regarded recent SUVs (Forester, Acadia)... imho they were steaming piles of poo in terms of driving dynamics (nevermind sight lines), but probably not for their respective classes (which as you can tell are not my cup of tea)... I can see how people can get themselves into trouble with them... I'm sure there are other models that are better + other models that are worse... they both had decent clearance + could get out of a driveway on a bad day... which is both good (for the experienced driver) and bad (for the idiot or naive)...
in the end, I agree, personal vehicle choice is up to the purchaser + their needs, and there are many good reasons to buy whatever vehicle, SUVs included... but I will still torment my SUV driving urbanite friends ;-)... Canyonero!
James...
