...well, aside from summer tires + all seasons being totally different (summer tires are typically terrible in snow + especially ice! most all seasons are mediocre in all seasons but not terrible in any either).

Probably in most states, all seasons are just fine + the best choice. In some northern states + up here in Canada, snow tires are a smarter choice (even for AWD, truck, or whatever).

It is true that you can drive safely with all seasons in winter. Good driving skills are important regardless... *but* you can drive faster (not stupidly fast but somewhat faster) with the same level of safety + control if you have good winter tires vs all seasons. Lots of data to show the differences in stopping distances + grip around curves. I did get caught once a few years back in a decent late-april snowstorm with all seasons on the car for a 4 hour drive. We were fine, but I had to drive significantly slower than if we had had our snows to have the same level of control... and yet we passed at least a dozen SUV's in the ditch...

So what we find up here in terms of drivers running all seasons in winter are 2 types: idiots who drive just as fast and end up in a collision, and those who drive *much* slower than is functional (because they have to or they'd end up in category 1) + tie up traffic. I hesitate to call them idiots per se, but it is mildly annoying to be held up...

Nowadays, I run summers in summer + have to get them off before the first snow. It's not hard. The evening the forecast looks sketchy, I do the swap... If you can change 1 wheel, you can change 4. If you can't change 1 wheel, you probably shouldn't be driving a car... I suppose the storage is an issue for some...

now if only they'd drop the ban on studs in Ontario... ridiculous!
