Most AWD systems even with all-season are much better than FWD even with snow tires, if the sole point of contention is getting going. It's not even a fair comparison. Having 100% vehicle weight on driven wheels delivers far superior mobility to 60% weight on driven wheels. Snow tires only deliver 30% more traction than average all-season tires, that's 30% on a smaller base number, and all-season tires in snow countries are better than the "average all season" to begin with. I have had first-hand experience with both types side by side. The two are not even close. My Highlander AWD with All-season (OE Michelin) and half tread depth had better traction on ice than my 9-5 with brand new Blizzark Revo (which was the ultimate ice and deep snow tire, not "performance/sporty winter tire").

Criticism against SUV's are even more misplaced. SUV tires are typically deep tread M&S type. There are hardly any summer slicks for SUV's, unlike the "high performance" tires for cars. The same idiots who slid the SUV's off the road would have driven a car off the road much sooner . . . which does bring up an interesting point: since no vehicle can get through any and all terrain, more capable ones might just get the idiot stuck farther away from home. Even an M1A1 tank with treads can get stuck on steep glacial face and render the operator even more stranded than usual (emergency vehicles can't even get to it) . . . that does not mean however the M1A1 is less capable in snow and ice than a Civic with 4 snow tires.

FWD Saab's are capable snow cars for what they are (AWD Saab's are even better), but let's not delude ourselves or potential new buyers with the FWD+snow being superior to AWD SUV's in getting going. Such falsehood would only make people bitterly disappointed under the worst circumstances.
