My best friend, co worker and best man took off in 2001 from Redondo Beach harbor in his 31' Camper & Nicholsons and is still out there.
He sailed to Hawaii, down to Tahiti, Bora Bora and back and forth between Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand for several years and then crossed over Australia to Malaysia and Thailand where he have been back and forth between Langkawi and Phuket for the last 3-4 years.
I admire him but DO NOT envy him. This is not for everyone and the stories he have told about spider bites turning into a mess, stomach flues and running over a sleeping whale and sitting on full alert for the next hour waiting for a pissed off whale attacking him or thunder and lightning taking out all the electric equipment on the boat or storms ripping the sail and he barely limped in to the nearest island for repairs.
Before Facebook it could go month's or a year before I heard from him and I wondered if he was still alive. Now whenever he have internet we get an update now and then over the social media which is pretty cool.
I hope he writes a book and make a load of money one day because he sure doesn't have any now or for retirement.
