If you have a boat that's paid for, plus some income that would make a huge difference. Trying to work as you go is very difficult. Marinas that have repair facilities tend to frown on free-lancers doing work. I suspect you'd have to hang around for a some time to start getting jobs--assuming you can work on boats well enough to get paid for it. And I'd certainly think twice about having someone who was just passing through work on a boat I owned. A lot of marinas won't let you do much if any work in the slips. Most of the places where you'd want to cruise don't have much in the way of jobs--mainly stuff like waiting tables, bar tending, etc. Those jobs would barely cover what a slip costs and it would be pretty hard to anchor out while working full time. You don't have to be rich, but you do have to have some income/savings to make it work. Sailing away on a boat is an escapist fantasy that people think would make their life easy, breezy. The reality is it's probably a lot harder than most people's work-a-day lives, just in different ways. But it could work and it could be a very interesting way to live. You just have to work at it, probably harder that you would at most day jobs. Take it slow, learn the ropes (literally), pay your dues and you might be surprised where it takes you. Good luck.
