A lot of people want to do this. I sure did, just never got there. But cruising is not all sunny days and fair winds.
As a former yacht delivery skipper and charter captain, let me ask you a couple of questions.
How much sailing--and cruising--have you done?
Has it been casual weekends or longer trips?
How much time have you spent offshore?
What kind of bad weather have you been in?
Are you comfortable sailing at night, in fog, and in poor weather?
How much do you know about boat maintenance, sail repair, weather, marine engines, rigging, marine electronics and electrical systems, navigation and piloting, etc? (If you are going cruising you need to know a fair bit about all of this stuff.)
Can you handle a 40' boat solo, at night, in bad weather? Or for days and weeks at a time?
Are you comfortable handling a sailboat under sail-only in tight quarters if the engine fails?
What are your seamanship skills like? (this is different that sailing ability)
It's not just about the wanderlust, the escape. It's also about being self-sufficient. And free. And I totally understand it.
But as NoSnaab notes, the hull-as-home life is not for everyone. If you have a significant other, a sailboat can be a pretty small place for a couple and you both really have to want to do it. It's a serious lifestyle commitment. It's also not cheap.
If you are just thinking of coastwise cruising or going semi-local to the Caribbean/Central America/Baja you can get away with less boat but you are more limited. For long-distance ocean cruising you need a more serious boat, equipment, and the seamanship skills to go with it. Many standard production sail boats aren't really up to the rigors of offshore cruising.
Mike Lynch's suggestion of doing a lot of chartering is solid advice. It's the best way to develop the skills you need before you make the leap and sail over the horizon.
Just my $0.02.
