they are also a whole lot of fun. And cruising is great. But like so many things it's best to do it so you aren't sweating bullets over every expense. So do some charters, join a club that owns the boats and get some time on the water. I'm betting you'll find out just how much you want to cruise. And if you need to work on skills, do a week at a pro sailing school (link below).
As for money.... It used to be that you could cruise on a shoestring, being "the guy" in each port who could fix engines, repair or make sails, rewire electrics. The well-heeled folks in each port would hire you and you could finance the next leg of your cruise. Not so much these days, although it can still work to some degree. Of course you also had to have the skill set. I learned to repair sails, am pretty good with marine engines, and can do 12 V electrics. A guy I used to hang with in my charter skipper days could do all that plus was a great carpenter and could do better fiberglass repair than I could. He got on his boat and sailed away. I was envious and knew I needed to learn more.
VVack...Don't set this dream aside and just give it up. You can always get a 30 footer and do a lot of weekend and vacation cruising and see what you like and don't. I spent a lot of fine times sailing from Marblehead and Boston to Maine, Cape Cod, the Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island, etc. It's pretty satisfying. It ain't all perfect but sometimes it's sublime. There's not much better than a night cruise, alone on the sea 20 or so miles offshore, steering by a rotating set of stars as the night rolls by. Or a quiet misty morning in a secluded anchorage, eating breakfast in the cockpit.
