I have a 99 540i 6 speed and a 2003 95 station wagon. SAAB is better in fuel cost, cargo room, and stereo. In almost all the other aspects, BMW wins hands down. Despite being 4 year older, BMW is smooth like glass ans solid like a bank vault, the doors on BMW feel twice thicker as SAAB's, the engine, transmission and suspension(light weight aluminum multi-link at four corners) are much more sophisticated than SAAB's, believe it or not, 540i with sports suspension has better ride comfort than my SAAB. Not to mention, 540i fits like a pair of gloves and it flies! my 9-5 is certainly a good family car, but 540i is two classes better.
