Saabs make more sense to me as used vehicles than as brand-spanking-new-off-the-lot vehicles. If I were the kind of person to have $40,000 to $50,000 to drop on a new car, I'm not so sure I would purchase a Saab. The fuel economy would be the big draw, but even so, I have been upset with my gas mileage on my 9-5. It seems like a lot of the higher-end cars come with powerful engines that don't yield very good gas mileage. It's almost like the manufacturers are banking on well-heeled buyers not being concerned with paying extra at the pump (or with the environment). It's no contest between Saabs and the others (Audi, MB, BMW, Volvo) when it comes to the price for a used one. When I was weighing used car options, the price of an older Saab rivaled the prices of boring old Toyotas and Hondas. Within my budget, other European brands weren't much of an option, unless I could settle for a 10+ year-old model. I feel like Saabs are the well-kept secret of the used auto world.
