I was wondering if we had any "economics" majors that read the BB.
I maintain that a used car is a better value than a new one, regardless of who makes it..(well, maybe not YUGO, or Diahatsu)
In particular, our brand... If someone buys a 10 year old car, and intends to keep it for, say 10 years. I think that it will be cheaper to keep, than a new car.
I don't have factual data, only my past experience with SAABs, and Mopars.
A co-worker recently bought a Lexus LS for $69,000. Complete with back-up camera. He says "buy new."....I agree he won't have too many mechanical failures, and the warranty will cover what ever defects he comes across....I just can't get past the $1400 car payment.
If you look at it logically, 6 of his car payments would be enough for me to completely rebuild the drivetrain, pay the insurance, and gas on my Older SAAB.
any comments? Buying a car is an emotional thing to a lot of people...
but other than that, why buy new??
