In terms of $ per mile, it's no contest. The single biggest cost of owning or leasing a car is depreciation, and depreciation is much higher in the first 3 years of a car's life.
The true economic issue though is value, and each person has hisor her own value priorities. For example: a new car should be less likely to strand you or to take up your time dealing with repairs. If you make a lot of money, and you put a high value on reliability (in part due to the value of your time), you wuld buy a new or newer car. If you are a college student with little income, you don't value reliability as highly.
A good economic compromise is probably to buy a low mileage, 2-3 year old car that has an excellent reputation for quality (like an Acura, or a 9-5 (but probably not a 9-3SS, at least not until they get mroe of th electrical bugs out) and get it CPO'd.
