It' really not that simple.... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Wed, 16 Nov 2005 06:20:47 In Reply to: New car/used car debate, -993-, Tue, 15 Nov 2005 23:25:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Comparing a used Saab with a 2-3 year old equivalent is not that simple. Obviously, comparing a $69,000 Lexus with a 10 year-old Saab is meaningless.
Variables that weigh in favor, or not, of a new or used car include the following.
1) New Saab: Free maintenance included in the cost.
2) New Saab: More years/miles of warranty coverage that can mitigate some maintenance costs.
3) New Saab: Better control over what maintenance is performed (eg.: oil changes)
4) New Saab: Known problems may be engineered out (eg.: DI cassette)
5) New Saab: New features...eg.: Xenon self-leveling headlights
6) New Saab: Wear and abuse is known....none at time of purchase
7) New Saab: Better gas mileage
8) New Saab: Recent decontenting
9) Used Saab: Lower initial cost
10) Used Saab: Wear and abuse is unknown
11) Used Saab: Maintenance history may be unclear
12) Used Saab: Lower insurance costs
13) Used Saab: Known problem history
14) Used Saab: Higher maintenance cost over years of ownership may be less than initial cost differential
15) Used Saab: No free maintenance included in the initial cost
16) Used Saab: Fewer years/miles of warranty coverage
17) Used Saab: Does not include features of new Saab
18) Used Saab: More features than newer models (less decontenting)
The point of the above is that the answer is not simple.
Personally, I have bought several used Saab's that are current year with 3K-7k miles on them (dealer loaners). It's my way of having it both ways...initial costs are significantly lower, yet all of the other advantages of new are intact.
