Need a spray can with "new car" smell...

But seriously, all kidding aside, there is a huge 'feel-good' factor about driving a new car.
A used car will always have a lower TCO. If somebody claims to save money by buying a new car I'm sure he's actually just inventing a reason to convince his wife...
For the extra money you spend on a new car you buy ease of mind and feel-good, and a little bit of extra comfort and safety.
Personally I put a large value on ease of mind. I totally agree with Jim Blake that if you buy a newer used car, the original owner knew he/she wasn't going to own the car for a long time. Same thing with dealer loaners/demos, fleet vehicles, rentals, etc. If you don't own the car you drive, or don't plan to own it for a long time, you don't treat it like you would when you do plan to own it long-term.
A new car is also less likely to break down on you while you're on the road. I hate it when that happens. It's always at an incovenient moment that throws your whole planning over, and I've never had the AAA tow truck show up within the promised time.
For the rest I also put some personal value on added safety features and feel-good, but not to the point that I would buy a car that's over my budget. For me, the feel-bad about drowning in debts would more than offset the feel-good of having a new car.
