A long time ago (15 years?) I read an article by some guys who had crunched the numbers, and according to them the least expensive thing to do was buy a new car, keeping it until the cost of any single repair exceeded the value of the vehicle at that time, at which point you would junk it. That seems a little unintuitive to me, but that's what they said. I'm not sure I personally would do a $2500 repair to a $3000 car even though they recommended that.
Sorry, but I can't provide you a source or details, and the cost of cars has escalated quite a bit since that time, so the data might not be valid any longer.
