My Dad tried out contacts back in the sixties when most were still rigid, and couldn't wear them for more than a few minutes...he said it just felt like something was stuck in your eye. When today's water-based lenses became popular in the 70's, he got those and still has 'em.
I'd be curious as to how your hard lenses feel. There are lenes called Rigid Gas Permeables (RGPs) on the market for people with certain types of issues, and I've heard they feel ok after you get used to them.
