If it's an every day car, it's very important. I'll buy the car/truck that fits the need with the least fuel consumption.
If it's a infrequent use car, fuel cost isn't an issue. I'll never sell my E-type roadster because it's thirsty!
Slightly Political paragraph: I think it is important nationally and internationally to have less of an environmental impact, but car changes aren't "the answer", just one small part of the answer. I think the primary and most important short/medium term impact better fuel economy could bring is less dependence on foreign oil, which should make global oil markets less of an impact on our oil and gasoline prices. Spiking fuel costs are real bad in lots of ways economically. I don't trust politicians of either party to actually fix things, it's up to us to minimize our liability to this risk right now.
I'd buy a hybrid if it had good seats, good handling, could plug in, and was more efficient (miles per gallon) than the diesels we are deprived of. Speed and power isn't paramount, as there are few places I can go 55 on a regular basis.
last question.. turning down the thermostat at home, adding solar hot water.
