Turning off lights, using less resources by reusing and recycling are all relatively straightforward and sometimes easy. But when it comes to buying new more efficient products to replace less efficient ones, I have never gotten good answers. It takes a lot of raw materials and energy to design, manufacture, and transport a new product, (especially a car). So then how inefficient or polluting of a product should be replaced to have a net benefit on the environment. I know it varies, but if you consider that many of the components which are manufactured for cars are made in countries with laxed emissions laws, then, as an example, buying a Prius may pollute more than continuing to drive your 1999 Saab 9-3 even if it gets half the miles per gallon and puts out more NOx, CO2, etc...
