Well, technically we're in an inter-glacial period that began about 11,000 years ago. Temps have gone up and down since then, but generally warmer. Sea levels have risen about 300 feet since the end of the last ice age, giving us the coastlines we have today. But they've been mostly stable for the past thousand years or so.
Because the rate of warming over the past 150 years has been greater than in previous periods, it seems logical to attribute that to human activity that puts more CO2 into the atmosphere, and probably a portion of the warming is due to stuff we do. Some is normal, on a geologic time scale. Ice cores going back a couple hundred thousand years tell us a lot, as do the size of glaciers and the rate at which they recede. Stuff is happening and we have to react. Just how is the question. Should we be proactive or reactive?
The media tends to sensationalize all this, but doesn't tie things together very well. And since people have trouble thinking beyond a couple years stuff that happens on the fringes of a geologic time scale are hard to imagine.
For example, you tie population growth (about 10 billion by 2040) to moderate climate change that could limit food production, mix in decreasing water supplies and things start to go south in a hurry. The media look at these as independent variables but they are really all linked. Most environmental advocates also tend to focus on one or two issues, but it is the combination of many factors that get scientists worried. So much stuff is related, sometimes in ways we don't understand, and this is really all new territory for humans.
Then you add in social/political pressures and competition for limited resources and it gets even messier.
So does doing "green" stuff help? Beats me. But it can't hurt.
