I agree with you Wasabi in several ways, but:
I agree that ethanol from corn is a bad route to go. It has TOO great an impact on the human food chain. However, there are companies that are working very hard on ethanol from cellulose gleaned from non-food plant matter. This is no more than 2-3 years away from being in production at no more that $2/gal. If we can replace fossil fuels with renewable sources, IMHO this would be a great benefit. Yes mileage is lower (currently) on ethanol. Have you seen the reports on the SAAB E100 vehicle (can't think of its name at this moment)? Excellent power and reasonable mileage.
As for plug-in hybrids, again the main concern is where the energy comes from. If it comes from burning more fossil fuels (oil, coal, etc.), then there is little to be gained other than the lower direct consumption. However, if the electricity comes from solar power (solar cells, wind power, etc), then ti me it makes sense.
Around the house, I have switched almost all bulbs to compact fluorescents. We have a programmable thermostat as well as a simple hot air solar heating system. We still have a 40gal. gas water heater. It was new when we bought the house.
I live 6 blocks from where I teach and when Wisconsin weather permits, I walk or bike to work.
