A diesel will not decrease your expenses much at first due to high cost of vehicles and fuel. Over the long term though, it will save money.
I disagree with the foreign oil dependency theory. A diesel will get 10-20 mpg better than a gas car. This means about 100-300 fewer gallons per year in fuel. Any way you cut it, that is decreasing oil dependency.
