Read a good article in a business mag recently. There are issues with diesel and USA. It seems that because of our processing of crude, we don't make a lot of diesel (has to do with our method). We are actually importing it from foreign source; primarily Europe. So, it doesn't reduce our dependancy on foreign oil at all and takes the refining to foreign sources. It takes about 10 years of redtape to bring new refineries online to correct this.
Add to this that domestic and regional (Canada) crude oil sources are starting to come online (others too like China and Russia). They weren't cost effective until gas hit near $3.00/gal. Now they are and they'll be supplying a lot of crude to the US. Middle East will probably stabilize the price like they did last time to maintain our dependancy instead of shifting it to other sources. So we'll have the crude, but not the diesel refineries.
Bottom line was don't buy a diesel because you think it will be cheaper due to higher gas mileage. Diesel already cost more than premium, and is anticipated to continue rising as we become more dependant on importing diesel from foreign sources. Gas on the other hand is refined here in the US and is anticipated to plateau soon when the Middle East sees orders shifting to other countries.
