Police profiling is a big topic in my town (very diverse mixture of incomes and ethnicities), so much that they actually keep records and publish their "improvements" in not targeting minority groups for an inordinate number of traffic stops. Note that some of the reason that police pull over "suspicious" vehicles is so they have an excuse to conduct other investigation, i.e. what is the driver drinking/smoking, is the city sticker up to date (big revenue generator), etc., but they can't (won't?) do so unless there is a traffic violation first.
A great example of police profiling based on the type of car is a friend of mine who recently bought the car that was sitting in the garage of a house he bought (package deal) from the children of an old lady that was now living in a nursing home: a 1993 Cadillac Coupe de Ville (2-door), triple black, Landau roof, gold-plated lettering, wire wheels, Vogue tires - and only 4,000 miles! This had been her deceased husband's car, needed a new battery, new license plates, air in the tires, nothing else. The car screams "Gangsta!" and he regularly got pulled over when driving until the police in his town learned who he is.
