Great question! I'd never considered it, but when I look at cars that are pulled over, cops do often seem to target cars in poor condition or with a 'pimp' factor. From their experience, they are probably more likely to find more violation, traffic or otherwise, with these vehicles.
I had a friend who lived in the country and had one of those huge '80s Mercedes and he got pulled over all the time. I did once get tailed by a cop for miles who finally pulled me over when I touched the white line with my tires. This was in a college town at night, so I suspect he was looking for drunk drivers and it had little to do with my car. Still, I wonder if he would have wasted the time had I been in a shiny new Lexus rather than an older Saab.
I think Saabs might fall into the solid upper-middle-class non-criminal category, probably along with a good number of other cars, which probably do get a little bit of a break from many cops, fair or otherwise. That said, I'm sure a revenue generating highway ticket trap wouldn't discriminate.
