We have friends who broke down and leased a new Forester (they are typical Subie types who don't test drive anything else and hence don't know better)... one half wanted something now to replace the older subie... the other half wanted to drive the old one into the ground until the vast array of better hybrids comes on line in the next couple years... leasing addressed this fairly well (at significantly higher cost than driving the old one into the ground)...
I have trouble with leases (aka quasi-renting) from a financial perspective... though with good rates and reasonable residuals, not necessarily such a bad way to do it vs buying outright with financing (and of course buying outright with cash is admitting your investments do worse than the finance rates ;-)... I calculated a few years ago... buy vs lease on a 9-5 (all msrp, real life differs of course), buying the lease out at the end, the difference was a couple thousand $, which to me seemed a fair amount to spend to "test" the car out for "lemonness" - kind of a new car purchase insurance policy - if it's a dud, you save the residual vs having to sell a dud... still, not for me...
I'm very interested to see this new concept tuesday... Castriota is saying the right things, and the technology sounds like a good step forward! we will see!
James...
