As one of those who did drop ~$45K on a new 9-5, I do feel like a minority on this site... especially in the last few years (I've been hanging around here, on and off, since I bought my first Saab in '99). It seems like ~6-7 years ago there was much more chatter about the cars themselves vs. car repair (that's what the 900 and 9000 forums were for), but the current trend is no surprise given the starvation diet Saab lived these last few years under GM.
I cannot work on my own car. I have a pacemaker so auto repair, arc welding and gas chainsaws are no longer allowed... must avoid strong electrical fields so much of what goes on here lately is not that interesting. However, I still check in from time to time because I like to understand how things work and see what problems other have had so I can watch out for them.
I think the hope for Saab right now is Audi, Acura, Lexus, Infinity, BMW and MB (in that order) drivers who want something different... definitely NOT the people who frequent this board - you guys like your used cars (and station wagons - I mean "sport combis") and that's OK... somebody is going to have to buy my 2010 someday. Then again, the weekly rant about some new feature (rain sensing wipers, adaptive head lights, power sunroofs, power windows) that adds no value and is expensive to buy and fix does get old. I'm not claiming that all change is good, but I do think rain sensing wipers are great.
The dealer that I bought my 9-5 from actually bought it and a few others from a dealer in a neighboring state. I took this as a positive, since I do not think a dealer would go to the trouble of buying extra cars if he did not think he could sell them (I hope).
Let's see what some warmer weather, the 9-4x and some advertising can do to boost sales a bit.
Stan
