it needs to come in around $20K for me. IMHO, there's no need to pay more than that for a car. Mini Cooper or Golf sized is fine, with a hatch. I'd like a turbo diesel, maybe with a hybrid drive system. I need distance capability, and still want some performance. Gas could hit $5/gal this year which is totally painful. But how well a hybrid justifies its purchase price is still a question with unclear answers unless the car is kept a long time.

Unfortunately, these days $20K is still in upper econobox range. So a used whatever for the same money is just a lot better deal. I tried out several cars going for $20k last spring and all were a lot less car than my 15 year old Saab 9K. IMHO there's a lot to be said for buying solid older cars that were $35-40K new. Waay better value for the money, even with higher gas prices.
