If you're lucky, you can unscrew the cap (with the knurled edge) and replace the ball, springs, and seals. I don't think that they've changed the internals for those much over the years. I think that this is just a dumb mixing valve that's like a Delta kitchen faucet.

Murphy, however, says that, the cap is probably corroded onto the body of the valve and any attempt to turn it with a pipe wrench will leave the aluminum covered with needle-like shards and crack the copper piping the valve is connected to.

Is there a room in back of the shower that you (or a plumber) can cut the sheetrock to access the unit from the other side?
