It's an idiot light and that's it. It has no logic to it that says at XXXX RPM I should see XX PSI of oil if not ground the dash light.
If it goes below 7 psi, I believe that is the trip number from WIS (been a while since I looked but its silly low), then it grounds the circut of the dash light to the block of the motor hence turning on the light.
So yes you could run 10 psi at cruising speed, if something gave out, and you would never know you've killed your motor till you drop the revs a little and drop below 7 psi.
It's not worth it. Run a 10w-40/0w-40 oil at the minimum in the summer. It doesn't really cost that much more if you buy a 5 qt jug.
