providing an opinion based on my experience and having measured actual numbers on a gauge.
Also whether I've referenced a 10w-30 or 5w-30 that first number really means nothing in the grand scheme of things as it refers to its viscosity characteristics when cold. The second number, the 30 here in your case, is the important one as it describes its viscosity once its warmed up.
If I've made it seem as though you (or any other reader running a Xw-30 oil) is going to destroy his/her motor my apology. I only gave an opinion I have come to through research in that a 30 weight oil is insufficient in saabs and I would recommend anybody that asks me what to use that they use a Xw-40 in the winter and an Xw-50 in the summer.
And to you statement of the using a heavier then stated oil viscosity then my/any manual calls for here is a photo from my manual. It should be the same for any ng900/99 9-3 (non viggen) owner as this is a spec sheet for the B204 motor. You'll see clearly that it does state to use a 15w-50 or 20w-50 when in a climate above 60 F.
