My monthly electric bill went up about $20 - 25 after getting a Volt. Note that we have relatively low prices for electricity in the Chicago area, and the winters have been somewhat mild since we got a Volt; this is an issue since the range decreases in colder weather due to battery efficiency and use of resistive heat. In very cold weather, the gasoline engine will run automatically (two user-controlled temperature threshold settings) primarily to provide heat - and internal combustion engines are excellent heat sources!

I have taken our old 2014 Volt on a few 300+ mile non-stop trips. After the power in the battery is used up, it reverts to the internal combustion engine - which is the advantage that the Volt has over most competitive vehicles, including the new Bolt. Yes, this adds a lot of complexity to the mix and I really wonder how it will hold up a few years out of warranty, but there are people running 2011 Volts with well over 100,000 miles. Note that GM has lowered to powertrain warranty from 5yrs/100,000 miles to 5 years 60,000 miles. Also note that the 2016/early 2017 Volts (new platform) seem to have some teething problems (recalls) that were not so plentiful on the first generation cars, at least from my point of view. Good news is that they are taking care of these and by the time they are used cars should have had the work done.

For long trips in the winter, however, I still like to take my SAAB as it is seasonally equipped with dedicated snow tires! Still haven't sprung for snows for the Volt, which is lucky as they changed the hub bolt pattern from full-sized GM to mid-sized GM with the new version.
