Hello,
I will have to say it has been a long time since I did this job. First the plastic J is to wedge on the left side of the timing belt at the crank gear to hold the belt in the gear while installing the belt. For the timing belt you only need to remove the 5 or 6 E10 bolts to get the crank pulley off. But to remove the gear to replace the seal you will need to remove the E20 and yes you can make a tool to hold the crank pulley. Just get a big piece of bar stock, cut out a section were the E20 bolt is and drill some holes to install 2 bolts back in. I believe the 60 degrees back is to get you a safe place so you can't bend any valves if the crank moves a little when removing the E20 bolt. The timing marks on the gears and you match them to the tool in the tool kit. I believe the rear cover has some reference marks that are close if the kit did not come with that tool. It is rare for for the front crank seal to leak so make sure it is the leak before changing it. Sometimes it is the oil pump which uses a special sealant. Don't hesitate to ask any more questions that arise. Good Luck, Bernie
