Thanks Bernie! You've helped before on B308's and you're a great and generous resource. So THAT's what that J piece is for.... BTW, I am/was a member here but when I tried to login the site wouldn't let me, I got the "membership has expired contact webmaster" So I have. I couldn't find a self-serve link on the Webpage so I had to make this new user name. My Member name is THEWHEELL22 and I'l go back to that when I get a link for renewal.
I'm speculating about the front main because it's so hard to see up there from below but I will certainly confirm before doing unnecessary work. there is a lot of build up oil that seems eminate from there. The sump cover doesnt look like the heaviest build up and the oil pan looks ok, just streaked with oil. The turbo has been failing for some time, AM smoke puffs, diminished pick up n go, oil in the secondary air pipe etc so was thinking increased case pressure may have pushed the seal to fail.
The Timing belt is due anyway. I think I know the markings, just nervous on these 0-tolerance engines. The backing off from TDC before removing the harmonic balancer makes sense after what you said.
OK to throw a couple new exhaust followers in without replacing them all? Might quiet that annoying tappet sound. It used to sing link a Singer sewing machine before ai spent a few months around dusty roads during a work assignment I was on.
I'll report back when I have news. Cheers!
