I've found it really useful for confronting a variety of personalities in the workplace and elsewhere. Been a while since I've read it, but the author breaks difficult personalities into seven categories, I think. You may be dealing with a few different personalities in one person, and more than one problem person in the offfice.
You need to read the book, because there is a lot of detail. But it sounds like you are dealing with one form or another of a Bully. Or is it a sniper that takes shots at you behind your back? Either way the answer is to call them on their hostile talk. Which they will deny. You need to insist in the case of the sniper,'gee, when you said I got that job by sleeping for it, it sounds like you don't think I earned it. It that right? No, really, saying that sounds like you are saying I did not earn....'
Gotta call out the sniper, and stand up to the Bully. The Bully will throw you for a loop. When you stand up to them, with a smile on your face, and present a strong rational, they'll want to be your best buddy.
Probably not wise to just tell the other person what a loser they are. Better to just confront the behavior that is trying to put you down. No one really likes to stand up to this stuff, or even see it take place. Which is why it is so effective.
Grab the book, it is worth a read and implementing.
