Clearly you don't work as a software developer. If you did, you would have developed the thick skin needed :-). I hate to play devil's advocate, but since when do things like what kind of house one drives, one's physical appearance, etc. get into the picture of everyday work? is it necessary to know that one drives a dumpy Escort or a decked out Aero?
In this day and age in the corporate world, it matters little who starts an issue; all that matters is that the issue exists. Learn to ignore things would be my first suggestion. If it escalates WELL past the level of 'juvenile mockery' then others will start noticing.
There is a big difference between 'I don't like so-and-so' and a truly hostile working environment. If you're going to make noise, make it for a worthwhile cause.
