Fireworks sales are LEGAL in Indiana to adults over a certain age - plenty of Chicagoans drive there and bring them home, the Illinois cops regularly set up roadblocks. My undertanding is that actually using them in Indiana is a different story, the lawmakers agreed to discourage their constituents from destroying themselves. The relationship between fireworks usage around the fourth of July (next weekend!) and Emergency Room cases for the same is pretty well established; it should be no suprise to the parents that fireworks are inherently dangerous.
So, where did these fireworks come from? I would not be too suprised if one of these kids' parents or older siblings was the purchaser of the fireworks. Did the cops happen to even ask this question?
While I am not normally a reactionary, in some way I feel that inaction on your part ecourages continued irresposible behavior by the entire family.
