You do realize that many products come out of the same barrel of oil, right? That burning gasoline and diesel does not preclude other products being made, right? (I worked for many years in the R&D lab of a major oil company.)

Oil is not infinite of course, but neither is steel, lithium, or any other natural resource. (We also have plenty within our own borders, buying it from unstable regimes overseas is a bad political decision.) However oil is a VERY LARGE resource, not a scarce one, sufficient to last centuries, certainly long enough for other energy sources to be developed due to natural technological progress in the marketplace. If someone develops a better mousetrap (or battery, or energy source), people will flock to it, and that will ultimately happen as a matter of course.

I was, and still am, against bailouts and subsidies. I have no interest in "green" technologies for sake of greenness. If such technologies are not superior overall against their competitors in the marketplace I have no use for them. On the other hand, if they are truly superior they will succeed without the need for subsidies. That's why my watchword is "if the technology is any good it doesn't need to be subsidized."

The Volt is pretty much a boondoggle, heavily subsidized and sold at a loss, and still not desirable to most car buyers. That's not merely my own opinion, that is objective reality.
