There is probably more than a few centuries of oil left on this planet at current consumption rate. Just look at the hydrocarbon content of nearby planets. There may not be enough oxygen on this planet to oxidize all the hydrocarbon. That's why this part of the inter-planetary space is full of hydrocarbon. The limiting factor on how long we are going to using hydrocarbon will be if and when we find something even easier and cheaper to use . . . just like petroleum replaced whale oil and vegetable oil more than a century ago.
Price is an integral part of "better" vs. "worse." High price means the buyer has to give up something else of value.
